'I might have a sachet (a small closed container made of paper or plastic, containing a small amount of something, usually enough for only one occasion, a sachet of sugar) of powdered stuff in a drawer somewhere,' Esson offered.
     'Powdered?' Rebus said. 'What is this, World War Two?' I thought we were at the dawn of (the start of a period of time or the beginning of something new) a shiny new country?'
Only if you can be bothered to vote for it,' Clarke chided (to speak to someone severely because they have behaved badly) him.

'I'll tell you the box I'm ready to mark my cross (a written mark X or +) in - a couple of drinks after Great King Street (is a street in Northern Edinburgh with a large number of businesses or name of whisky).

Christine Esson decided that Rebus needed enlightening (to provide someone with information and understanding). 'A single girl doesn't go hungry for long in this town.'

Ogilvie chipped in (to interrupt a conversation in order to say something).

  'Who is it then?' Rebus asking Clarke from above the rim of his mug.  

Rebus stood his ground, mouth puckered (to gather into small wrinkles or folds), and deep in thought. Then he ambled (to walk in a slow and relaxed way) forward and leaned in towards her ear.

She froze for a second before spooning granules into a clean mug.

'You straitened your back a little and checked your fringe (a border of hair that is cut short and hangs across the forehead). I thought maybe it was for her benefit.

'It has been said. So is he taking you somewhere nice?'
     'Why do you need to know?'
     'Takes a bit of time to get gussied up (dressed up in one's best clothing) - I was just thinking I could do Great King Street on my own…'
