Ellipsis или три точки в Английском. В каких случаях используются?

In English grammar, ellipsis refers to the omission of words or phrases that can be understood from the context. It is often used to create a more concise [краткое] or informal sentence structure. However, it is important to use ellipses appropriately to ensure clarity and avoid ambiguity [неоднозначность]. Here are some guidelines on when to use ellipses and when not to:

1. Omission of words in a quotation: Ellipses are commonly used to indicate the omission of words from a quotation. This is often done to condense a lengthy quote or remove irrelevant parts while maintaining the original meaning. In such cases, three dots (...) are used without spaces between them. Here's an example:

Original quote: "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."

Quoted with ellipsis: "The only thing... is fear itself."

2. Trailing off or indicating unfinished thought: Ellipses can be used to suggest a trailing off or an unfinished thought, often to create a dramatic effect or leave something unsaid. They are typically used at the end of a sentence. Here's an example:

"I wanted to tell her, but then I realized..."

"He was about to confess his secret, but then..."

3. Pauses or hesitation in dialogue: Ellipses can represent pauses or hesitation in dialogue, indicating a moment of silence or uncertainty. This usage is common in informal writing and dialogue. Here's an example:

"Well... I'm not sure what to say."

"I was thinking... maybe we could go to the movies?"

4. Indicating an ongoing action: Ellipses can be used to indicate an ongoing action that continues without interruption. This is often seen in narrative writing. Here's an example:

"She walked down the street, humming to herself..."

It is important to note that ellipses should not be overused or used indiscriminately [без разбора]. They should be used purposefully and sparingly to maintain clarity and avoid confusion. Additionally, in formal writing or academic contexts, the use of ellipses may be limited, and it is recommended to follow specific style guides or guidelines provided.

Remember, ellipses should not be confused with an ellipsis (the punctuation mark "...") used to indicate the omission of words within a sentence or quotation.
