Back at the monitor, proceedings (a series of
events that happen in a planned and controlled way) had started. Rebus gave a
plastic casing a thump
(to hit something with your fist), but there was still no sound. No sign of a radio
anywhere either.

Rebus was sitting in his flat, smoking and thinking when he heard someone thumping (to hit and cause a noise) on his
door.

'Constitution (the general state of someone
health) of an ox,' Rebus declared, thumping (to hit someone with your fist) his
chest with a fist. He watched the other man leave, and then finished his
caramel wafer before heading outside to the smoking zone.

One more thing - this is the price you pay
for me not thumping (a heavy blow with a
hand) you. Whatever happens among the Saints, we never
talk, we never grass (to inform esp. to police) - okay?

Afterwards, he kept tight-lipped (speaking very little) about
who'd thumped
(to strike or beat with something thick and heavy) him. And that's just one
of the stories.' Rebus paused. 'Which is why it's a shame I let slip our little
theory - the one about you being responsible.'

'Owen Traynor,' she obliged. 'With an
investor who got thumped after falling-out
(disagreement).'
'Ending up in intensive care,' Rebus
added.

Then again,
with Kennedy's head resting against the cold concrete floor, the temptation would
have been to haul it up by the hair and thump it down again.

The blood
was rushing in his ears by the time he reached the top, but he hadn't had to
pause for breath. The door was closed, so he thumped (to hit someone and cause a noise) on
it. His hand came away (leave in certain condition) stained pink.
Looking again, he saw that paint had been thrown at the door, then wiped off.
