There where sticky Formica-topped (a type of hard plastic made into a thin sheet that is used to cover table tops) tables and plastic cutlery, along with paper cups for the tea, the drawstring (string to pull and seal a tea bag) hanging over the side of each.

Classy (highly stylish or elegant),' Rebus said, fishing out his tea bag and depositing it on the smallest, thinnest paper napkin he'd ever seen.

'You not eat?' Clarke asked, making a professional job of cutting through (to penetrate something by cutting) the skin of her potato.

'What about you? Promotion  suiting (to be right for a particular person or situation) you?'
     'Workload's no respecter of (affect everyone in the same way) rank.'
     'Well earned (deserved because of what you have done or experienced), all the same (despite what has just been said).'

Rebus tried to remember how many years they'd worked together - not that long really, in the scheme of things (considering everything). Didn't see nearly
