Rebus had expected high ceilings and airy rooms, but
they seemed to be in the eaves (the edge of the roof that sticks out
over the top of a wall).
Alice Bell hadn't bothered to ask for ID. She was
leading them past the galley-style (a kitchen in a ship or aircraft)
kitchen into the living room.
'I'm almost afraid to ask,' she blurted out
(to say something suddenly and without thinking, usually because you are exited
or nervous).
The young woman's knees seemed to buckle (to
give way) in relief and she sat down heavily on an armchair.
'A car smash.

her a few times - she missed a class this morning, and that's not like her.'
She was dressed in a T-shirt with an unbuttoned
cardigan over it, and black denims (a thick, strong cotton cloth, often
blue in colour, used specially for making jeans).
Her face was round and her cheeks slightly puffy
(it is slightly swollen).
'Whiplash (a neck injury caused by
sudden forward movement of the upper body, especially in a car accident), sprains (an injury to the joint caused by a
sudden movement)and bruises (an injury or mark where the skin has
not been broken but is darker in colour, often as a result of being hit by
something),' Clarke explained.'
