Ian Rankin. Standing in another man's grave. Page 11.

Bert Jansch (Herbert or 'Bert' Jansch was a Scottish folk musician and founding member of the band 'Pentangle') was dead, too.

Rebus had seen him play a few solo gigs (musical performance) in Edinburgh down (distant) the years.

He was no expert, but he could tell (differ) Jansch playing from the other guitarist in the band, John Renbourn. As far as he knew, Renbourn was still around (to be alive) - may be living in the Borders. Or was that Robin Williamson (is a Scottish multi-instrumentalist musician and singer)?

When the two musicians stepped on to the stage - looking as though they'd roused themselves from armchairs by the roaring fire (strong emotion) - he'd leaned in towards her (to incline towards someone).

Next to his record deck (record player) lay a plastic guitar pick (a small plastic piece used to pluck the strings of guitar or similar instrument).

In the years since, Rebus had rubbed all the writing from the pick, but had never used it on a guitar of any kind.
'Never learned to fly a plane, either,' he said to himself.
